Tomorrow in class, we’re going to continue with our discussion about TWYH.  Please blog some thoughts about the second half of the book. What are you interested in talking about?  Also, here are some things to think about: 

  • What new insights does this memoir provide?
  • What can we learn from Erin Gruwell’s story?
  • In what ways does this memoir affect your thoughts about teaching/teachers?
  • Can one person make a difference in the world?
  • What is Gruwell’s turtle? How do you know?

  • How did you like the book?
  • Did you feel like parts of the book were unrealistic or corny? Why?
  • Why do you think Gruwell’s teaching style was effective? Or not?
  • Could she have tied the large events of the book together more effectively?
  • Do you think she focused on too few students?
  • Should Gruwell have followed up on the initial students?
  • Did this book affect your perceptions of teaching?
  • Do you think that the students’ acceptance of her happened too quickly? If not, do you think her social class had anything to do with this?
  • Should there have been more description of classroom interaction?
