Time-management can be a difficult skill to master during your freshmen year, or at any other time.  A woman that I know (we’ll just call her Jane) shared her secret to success with me and I want to share it with you.

Jane has already graduated from college, but when she was in school she had very high grades, and almost always had time to spare. How did she do that!? She treated her education like a job. Every morning she woke up, showered, and “went to work” by 8:30. On some days, that might mean that she went to class.  If she didn’t have class, though, she still utilized that precious time by doing her homework.  She would work every day until 5pm.  Most of the time, she had her homework done before she had to “clock out” at the end of the day.  This left the rest of the evening open for whatever else she wanted to do: clubs, sports, gym, hanging out with friends, dinner, movies, leisurely reading.

I think that the key to her success was consistency.  She had a specific schedule that did not change drastically every day.  Everything that needed to be done had a time for her to do it.  Furthermore, she prioritized.  Jane knew that her homework had to come before most of the other things that she was involved with.  To do well, you don’t necessarily need to work from 8:30 until 5 every day.  But you should maintain a schedule that works, and try to work before you play.
